Fig. 3

Metabolic activity of murine macrophages after treatment with lauric acid or its esters. Metabolic activity was assessed by metabolism of resazurin to the fluorescent product resorufin. Untreated RAW cells represent the negative control, and RAW cells stimulated with 0.1 μg/mL LPS served as the positive control. Increasing doses (0, 0.5, 2.5, 12.5, 62.5, and 312.5 μM) are signified by increasing color intensity within treatment compound. Solid bars indicate control or cells treated with glycerol monolaurate, lauric acid, or methyl laurate, whereas patterned bars indicate cells stimulated with LPS or both LPS and fatty acids. Values are reported as LSM ± SE. * indicates means (fatty acids alone) differ significantly from DMSO, # indicates means (fatty acids following LPS) differ significantly from DMSO-LPS. Different letters indicate means differ (P < 0.05, Tukey’s HSD). Overall, fatty acid treatment interacted with LPS stimulation (interaction, P < 0.01) on cellular metabolism of resazurin
